MPs Ibrahim Al-Tarawneh, Majham Al-Sqour, and Suleiman Al-Zaben announced their candidacy on Monday for the presidency of the Twentieth House of Representatives in its third ordinary session, during the council's first session chaired by MP Musa Al-Wahsh.
The House of Representatives formed a committee of three MPs to oversee the election of the permanent bureau and the vote counting, in accordance with the council's internal regulations.
The House of Representatives opened its first session under the chairmanship of MP Musa Al-Wahsh, after MP Majham Al-Sqour, the longest-serving member, excused himself from presiding over the session due to his intention to run for the speakership.
MPs Rand Al-Khozoz and Hamzah Al-Tubasi assisted Al-Wahsh in managing the session, as they were the two youngest attending members, and their duties will end immediately upon the election of the House Speaker.
Paragraph (b) of Article Three of the internal regulations prohibits the MP presiding over the opening session from running for the speakership of the House of Representatives in the same session.
According to the internal regulations, the winner of the speakership is the candidate who obtains an absolute majority of the votes of those present if there are more than two candidates; if no candidate achieves the required majority, a second round is held between the two candidates with the highest votes, and the winner is determined by a simple majority.
After electing the Speaker, the House will proceed to select the First and Second Deputy Speakers and the Speaker's assistants, completing the formation of the permanent bureau for the third ordinary session.
