Privacy policy

What we collect when you read, subscribe or get in touch, why we collect it, and the choices you have.

This privacy policy sets out the privacy practices of Al Rai newspaper and the Al Rai website, www.alrai.com, as well as our email newsletters and the other applications owned and operated by the Jordan Press Foundation “Al Rai”, and any services on which this notice appears.

For the purposes of this policy, and unless stated otherwise, every reference to “Al Rai” includes both the Al Rai website and Al Rai newspaper.

What information do we collect about you?

The information we collect when you interact with the Services falls into two categories:

  1. Personal information you provide when you subscribe, submit a request, fill in a survey or give us your email address.
  2. Non-personal information collected by technological means.

Billing and credit card information

To accept payment for subscriptions, we have an agreement with Network International Services Limited Jordan. We therefore do not collect or store your name, address, phone number, email address, credit card details or other billing information. These are handled by the Network International Services Limited Jordan payment gateway and are subject to its own policies, available on its website.

Device information

We may collect non-personal information about the computer, mobile phone or other device you use to access the Services, such as your IP address, location information, unique device identifiers, browser type, browser language and other technical information.

Analytics, log files and reading history

Like most websites, we collect some information automatically and store it in log files. This may include IP addresses (the general area or location from which you access the internet on your computer or other device), browser type, operating system and other information about your use of the Services, including the history of the pages you view.

We may combine this automatically collected information with other information we collect about you. We do this to improve the services we offer you — including personalised recommendations, advertising and currency display — to improve marketing, and to track access to and use of the Services across the devices you use.

We use third parties to provide us with information, reports and analysis about how visitors use our site and browse. These parties may independently record the type of device and operating system you use, general location information and activity within our apps, such as how often you use them.

Location information

Some of our mobile apps can offer content based on where you are, if you choose to turn that feature on in the app. If you do, your current location is stored locally on your device for the app to use. If you choose to save a location-based search to your history, we store that information on our servers. If you do not turn on location services, or the app does not have this feature, the app will not send us location information and we will not collect or store it.

Ads in our apps are not targeted to you based on your current GPS location, but they may be targeted based on your sign-in details or your device’s IP address.

Third parties

Some of the services and advertisements included in the Services, including on the Al Rai website and in our mobile apps, are provided or operated by third-party companies, which may collect information about your use of the Services.

These companies may place or recognise cookies, web beacons or other technologies to track certain non-personal information about visitors to our website. For example, when serving an ad, an advertiser may place or recognise a unique cookie on your browser to collect information about your use of the Services. Similarly, an advertiser or ad server may collect your unique device identifier while serving an ad. In many cases, this information can be used to show you ads on other websites based on your interests.

We have no access to, or control over, these third parties’ use of cookies or other tracking technologies.

Who do we share the information we collect with?

Within Al Rai

If you register to use the Services, we will not sell, rent, trade or allow any third party to use your email address without your permission.

In the future, we may enter into partnerships with other companies or businesses. In such transactions, your information may be included among the transferred assets.

Third parties

We also share information about our audience in aggregate or anonymised form. Nothing in this privacy policy restricts our use or sharing of information in aggregate or anonymised form.

Service providers

We contract other companies to provide services on our behalf, including credit card and billing processing, ad serving, email distribution, list processing and analysis, and promotions management. We give these companies only the information they need to perform their services. Service providers may not use personal information for any purpose other than providing services to Al Rai, and may not share, resell or use the data for their own direct marketing.

We reserve the right to disclose your opt-out information to third parties so they can remove your name from future solicitations, in accordance with applicable law. We may from time to time disclose personal information as required by law, for example in response to a court order or subpoena.

Emails you send us

If you email us, we will use your email address to reply directly to your questions or comments.

How do I change or update my personal information?

You can update or correct your account information by calling the Subscriptions and Distribution Department on +962 6 5600800.

Subscription cancellation policy

A subscription to any of our digital services cannot be cancelled until the subscription period has ended.

Is my information protected?

To prevent unauthorised access, keep data accurate and ensure information is used appropriately, we have put in place commercially reasonable physical, technical and administrative safeguards. Please note that no method of transmission over the internet or of electronic storage is 100 percent secure.

Changes to this privacy policy

This privacy policy may change from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page. If we make a significant or material change to how we use your personal information, it will be posted here thirty (30) days before it takes effect, and registered users will be notified by email.
