Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday that the creation of a security zone in Russian border regions is proceeding successfully, affirming that Moscow does not intend to discuss this zone during any potential peace negotiations with Kyiv.
Russian news agency Interfax reported Putin as saying, during a visit to a reserve command center of the joint group of forces, that Russia's goal is to "ensure the absolute security of the border regions," adding that Moscow does not plan to make the security zone a subject of potential negotiations with Ukraine.
In this context, the Kremlin stated that the security zone will extend for a distance of 660 kilometers along the border, noting that 450 kilometers of it are currently under Russian control, according to Al Jazeera channel.
Putin explained that the task of creating the security zone was assigned to the Russian armed forces following the Ukrainian forces' incursion into the Kursk region, noting that the mission was not limited to driving Ukrainian forces out of Russian territory, but also included establishing a security zone in neighboring areas.
