The Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council in Sudan, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Nabil Fahmy, discussed on Monday the developments of the situation in Sudan.
This came during their meeting at the Presidential Palace in Khartoum, in the presence of Foreign Minister Mohiuddin Salem, according to a statement issued by the Sovereignty Council.
Earlier on Monday, Fahmy arrived in Khartoum, accompanied by a number of Arab League officials, on his first visit to Sudan since taking office about 3 months ago. The duration of the visit was not announced, and he is scheduled to meet with a number of officials during it.
The Arab League, as part of the international quintet mechanism that includes the United Nations, the African Union, the European Union, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), is leading efforts to advance the political process in Sudan and is sponsoring consultations between Sudanese civil forces to reach an agreement to end the war.
During his meeting with Al-Burhan, Fahmy said that Sudan represents special importance in the Arab world, pointing to its roles in supporting Arab causes.
He affirmed the Arab League's commitment to supporting Sudan's sovereignty and territorial integrity and backing its national institutions, according to the Sudanese Sovereignty Council statement.
Fahmy added that his visit to Sudan comes within the framework of the Arab world's interest in the Sudanese issue and the necessity of addressing it.
He affirmed the Arab League's commitment to protecting Sudan's interests, in the context of the decisions issued by Arab ministerial councils and at the summit level, which aim to achieve peace and stability in the country and support reconstruction efforts.
The Secretary-General of the Arab League explained that he will continue his meetings and dialogues with Sudanese officials and the committee for preparing for the Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue, noting his openness to listening to their visions regarding establishing peace and restoring stability in Sudan.
Since April 2023, the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces have been fighting a war due to a dispute over the integration of the latter into the military establishment, which has caused famine as part of one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world, the death of tens of thousands of Sudanese, and the displacement of about 13 million people.
In the same context, Fahmy met with Sudanese Prime Minister Kamil Idris, according to the official Sudanese News Agency.
Idris affirmed the Sudanese government's openness to efforts to achieve peace in a way that preserves the country's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and institutions, calling on the Arab League to exert more efforts during the coming period.
For his part, Fahmy affirmed the Arab League's aspiration to enhance cooperation with the Sudanese government to achieve peace in the country, in addition to intensifying efforts with relevant regional and international parties, and supporting recovery and reconstruction endeavors.
In the same context, Fahmy met with the committee for preparing for the Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue at its headquarters in Khartoum.
He pointed to the Arab League's support for efforts to prepare for the Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue, stressing the need for the dialogue to be purely Sudanese, and for it to be held primarily in Khartoum or within Sudan.
Fahmy said that his visit to the "Sudanese-Sudanese Dialogue" committee comes in support of its efforts, based on his conviction of the importance of a dialogue that is led by the Sudanese and expresses their aspirations.
He explained that the success of the dialogue requires paving the way for it with agreed-upon arrangements that take into account the concerns of citizens and political forces, in addition to developing an action plan that includes specific steps and topics, allowing for gradual progress and enhancing the confidence of citizens and political forces in the feasibility of the dialogue process.
On August 30, an independent Sudanese committee announced the launch of an initiative to prepare the conditions for dialogue between political, civil, and societal forces, with the aim of contributing to stopping the war and paving the way toward a national consensus.
