The International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced on Monday the displacement of 895 people in a single day from 3 villages in Um Baru locality, North Darfur state, western Sudan, due to worsening insecurity.
The organization said in a statement that its field teams monitoring displacement estimated that 895 people were displaced from the villages of "Gor Bura," "Jaktura," and "Um Haraz" in Um Baru locality on October 24.
It added that the majority of the affected families crossed the border into neighboring Chad to the west, amid continued tension and deteriorating security conditions in the region.
The organization confirmed that the situation "remains extremely tense and volatile," noting that it continues to monitor developments closely.
This comes as the wave of displacement in North Darfur has continued since the beginning of October, following the intensification of fighting between the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), as the organization estimated the displacement of 765 people from the villages of "Wadi Arkuri" and "Um Maharik" in Um Baru locality on October 2.
Out of 18 states in Sudan, the Rapid Support Forces control the five Darfur states in the west of the country, with the exception of parts of North Darfur and West Darfur states that remain under the control of the army, which exerts its influence over most other states, including the capital, Khartoum.
The Darfur region accounts for about one-fifth of Sudan's area, which is more than 1.8 million square kilometers, while most of the country's population of about 50 million people is concentrated in areas under army control.
Since April 2023, the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces have been engaged in a war that erupted due to disagreements over the integration of the latter into the military establishment, resulting in the deaths of tens of thousands and the displacement of about 13 million people, in addition to the worsening famine and humanitarian crisis in the country.
