US official: Meeting between Israel and Lebanon in Rome in October

A US State Department official said that Israel and Lebanon will meet in Rome in October to discuss a US-brokered security agreement aimed at easing hostilities on the border.

The official explained that continued implementation of the agreement "remains the only viable mechanism to restore Lebanon's sovereignty and Israel's security," adding that the Lebanese ambassador and her Israeli counterpart will meet in Washington next week.

The seventh round of negotiations in the Italian capital ended in August without making progress on key issues.

The Israeli occupation army occupies what it describes as a "buffer zone" extending about 10 kilometers inside Lebanese territory along the border with Israel.

According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, more than 4,300 people have been killed as a result of Israeli strikes in Lebanon since March.
