The meeting coincides with the postponement of a round of negotiations between Israel and Lebanon, which was scheduled to be held this weekend in the Italian capital, Rome, to October.
Channel 12 Hebrew Private quoted an unnamed senior US official as saying on Saturday that the Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors in Washington would meet instead to "discuss recent developments and continue to implement the framework agreement".
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun confirmed on Saturday that "there are no new negotiations with Israel at the moment", stressing his country's commitment to Israeli withdrawal, the return of prisoners and displaced persons, and reconstruction as "national constants".
Direct negotiations between Lebanon and Israel began on April 14, 2026, with a meeting in Washington under US sponsorship, and covered ceasefire, withdrawal, borders, prisoners, and missing files.
On June 26, Beirut and Tel Aviv signed a "framework formula" in Washington under US sponsorship, which provides for a gradual Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory and the deployment of the Lebanese army in areas from which Israeli forces withdraw.
Between August 4 and 6, Rome hosted the seventh round of negotiations, which covered military, political, legal, and border files, as well as the file of prisoners and missing persons.
Despite the "framework formula" signed on June 26, Israeli attacks on southern Lebanon continue, while Israel still occupies areas in the south, some of which have been occupied for decades and others that it has taken over during recent wars and military operations.
