Aoun: No new negotiations with Israel at the present time

Lebanese media quoted the country's President Joseph Aoun as saying on Saturday that "there are no new negotiations with Israel at the present time."

Speaking from Nabatieh in southern Lebanon, Aoun said, "The Israeli withdrawal, the return of prisoners and displaced persons, and reconstruction are national constants that we pledge to implement."

Earlier, a US official confirmed the postponement of the next round of talks between Israel and Lebanon, which was scheduled in Rome next week.

The official told the American news website "Axios" that the next round of official negotiations will take place in October in the Italian capital.

Instead, the Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors will meet at the US Department of State headquarters in Washington to discuss recent developments and ways to implement the framework agreement between the two countries.

A source familiar with the matter said that Jewish holidays, the Paris conference to support the Lebanese army, and preparations for the UN General Assembly made it impossible for key participants to meet in Rome as originally planned.

On June 26, Lebanon and Israel concluded a US-sponsored framework agreement after 5 rounds of negotiations in Washington, which notably stipulates the disarmament of Hezbollah, the gradual withdrawal of Israel from the territories it occupies in southern Lebanon, and the deployment of the Lebanese army starting from "two pilot areas."

After the United States and Israel launched a war on Iran in late February, Hezbollah fired missiles at Israel, which launched a war on Lebanon covering various parts of the country.

Fighting between the two sides subsided following a memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States in June, and a subsequent agreement between Lebanon and Israel.

However, Israel has intensified its raids on southern Lebanon in recent days, despite the US-sponsored talks between the two countries.

The announcement of the postponement of the talks comes a day after Israel destroyed a Hezbollah tunnel network beneath the Ali al-Taher heights in southern Lebanon.
