US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that Iran is the "worst state sponsor of terrorism," affirming that preventing it from possessing a nuclear weapon is a priority for Washington, even if it leads to higher oil prices.
Trump considered the rise in oil prices a "small price to pay" to prevent Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
The US President added that the quantities of oil passing through the Strait of Hormuz have reached unprecedented levels, stressing the importance of the continued flow of energy supplies.
In a related context, the commander of US Central Command (CENTCOM), Brad Cooper, affirmed Washington's commitment to ensuring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
During an aerial tour over the strait, Cooper said that the main transit routes remain completely free of Iranian sea mines.
He stressed the continued support of the United States for its partners in the region, noting that the US military has helped facilitate the export of more than 1.5 billion barrels of crude oil since the summer.
These statements come in light of the continued tension between Washington and Tehran, amid fears of the impact of any military escalation on navigation and global energy supplies.
