UN concern over continued Israeli occupation operations in southern Syria

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) expressed its concern on Friday regarding the continued impact of Israeli military operations on civilians in southern Syria.

Speaking through its spokesperson, Shabia Mantoo, the commission called on Israeli authorities to cease acts of harassment and intimidation, including raids, restrictions on freedom of movement, detention, and the destruction of crops.

Mantoo noted that September saw approximately 280 Israeli military incursions into Syrian territory, the highest monthly number recorded since the beginning of the year. These incidents included the shooting and temporary detention of a disabled farmer, and the killing of a 22-year-old man in Quneitra.

Mantoo indicated that her office continues to document cases of Syrians being detained by Israeli forces, noting that it has received information that at least 49 Syrians remain in Israeli custody. She stressed that no one should be detained without a sound legal basis under international law, emphasizing the necessity of treating all detainees in a manner that preserves their dignity and upholds their human rights.

For his part, High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk called for an urgent and impartial investigation into incidents that led to the injury or death of civilians, noting that intentional lethal force should only be used when strictly unavoidable to protect life.
