Two killed in Saudi Arabia by shrapnel from intercepted drone that attempted to target Shaybah field

An official source at the Saudi Ministry of Energy reported on Wednesday that two people were killed and two others injured due to falling shrapnel after air defenses thwarted a drone's attempt to target one of the facilities at the Shaybah field, owned by "Aramco," in the Eastern Province.

The source explained, as quoted by the Saudi Press Agency, that air defenses intercepted the drone on Wednesday morning, and the incident resulted in a fire in a vehicle belonging to one of the contractors working at the field, outside the facility's perimeter, with no impact on operational activities.

He added that the two deceased were residents of Philippine and Nepalese nationalities, while the two injured individuals are of Pakistani and Indian nationalities.

The source indicated that the competent authorities have begun dealing with the incident and taking the necessary measures.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen announced the interception and destruction of 7 drones, including one heading toward the southern region, in addition to 6 that were intercepted and destroyed in the Medina and Eastern regions, without specifying the number in each.

The Coalition did not specify the launch sites of the drones in its statements.

These developments come in light of continuous military escalation between the Houthis and Yemeni government forces since last July, interspersed with attacks toward Saudi territory.

Since March 2015, Saudi Arabia has led a military coalition in support of the internationally recognized Yemeni government against the Houthis, who have controlled the capital, Sanaa, and several governorates since September 2014.
