"The Occupation and the Situation" by Bassel Ghandour wins five support awards at Venice's "Final Cut"

The Jordanian film "The Occupation and the Situation" by director Bassel Ghandour has achieved a new milestone for Jordanian cinema by winning five awards from supporting entities during the 14th edition of the "Final Cut in Venice" program, which concluded its activities as part of the Venice Biennale's "Venice Production Bridge."

The film, a co-production between Jordan, Qatar, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, and Palestine, received support from five specialized post-production entities, including Studio A Fabrica, which provided €15,000 for sound mixing, and Sub-Ti Ltd, which provided up to €7,500 for the production of a DCP version with Italian or English subtitles.

The film also received support from Sub-Ti Access worth up to €7,500 to prepare an accessible version for audiences with sensory disabilities, including subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing and audio description for the blind and visually impaired. Meanwhile, Rai Cinema provided €5,000 in support, which includes the right of first negotiation for free television broadcast rights in Italy.

"The Occupation and the Situation" was among six films selected to participate in the 14th edition of "Final Cut in Venice," a program aimed at supporting the completion of films from African countries and several Middle Eastern nations, including Jordan, by providing funding opportunities, post-production services, and opening channels to access the international film market.

The film features Jordanian director Bassel Ghandour, with Rula Nasser serving as producer. This achievement strengthens the presence of Jordanian cinema on international film industry platforms and provides the film with additional resources to complete the post-production phase and reach a wider audience.

According to the program's official description, the film tells the story of a family in Jerusalem struggling to keep their home from collapsing, both literally and metaphorically, in the face of a system that pushes its members toward unconventional forms of resistance and conflict.
