Smart Cameras to Enhance Oversight of Cargo Violations and Road Protection

The Ministry of Public Works and Housing has started operating cameras equipped with artificial intelligence technologies on several roads, aiming to enhance oversight of cargo violations and practices that damage roads or pose a danger to their users.

The Ministry said on Saturday that the cameras allow for the detection of axle load violations of trucks, including illegal lifting of moving axles, and the resulting increase in loads and damage to road layers.

The system also allows for monitoring the movement of prohibited cargo types on specific roads, including fuel and oil derivatives tankers, which are prohibited from traveling on the Ras Al Nakeb road, thereby enhancing compliance with instructions and maintaining road safety.

The system's tasks also include monitoring oil and oil spills and other attacks on roads, due to the risks they pose to users and damage to asphalt layers.

The Ministry explained that the system includes fixed cameras on roads and mobile ones within the Ministry's patrols, which are directed to critical sites that witness frequent violations or attacks.

The cameras are linked to operations and monitoring rooms, allowing for the detection of violations, their follow-up, and the taking of necessary legal action against violators.

The Ministry confirmed that the operation of the system is part of its ongoing efforts to maintain the road network, ensure its sustainability, extend its operational life, and reduce practices that cause damage and increase maintenance costs.

It added that this step aligns with government plans to develop the road network, improve its maintenance efficiency, enhance safety, and expand the use of modern technologies and smart solutions in oversight and monitoring work, contributing to protecting infrastructure investments and providing a safer, more efficient, and sustainable road network.
