National Library Hosts the 8th Amman International Stamp and Coin Exhibition

The National Library Department hosted, on Thursday, the activities of the 8th Amman International Stamp and Coin Exhibition, organized by the Jordanian Philatelic and Numismatic Society, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the independence of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, under the patronage of the Department's Director General, Firas Al-Sarabah.

The exhibition brings together participants from Jordan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Algeria, Syria, and Libya, in addition to participants of diverse nationalities and backgrounds, including Iraqi-Canadians, Iraqi-Turks, and Iraqi-Swedes, emphasizing the international dimension of the event and the space that the hobby of stamp and coin collecting represents for cultural and intellectual communication between peoples.

The exhibits included a diverse collection of stamps, coins, and philatelic and numismatic items that document various historical and civilizational stages, offering models of national and human memory and the transformations witnessed by countries and societies across different time periods.

During the opening of the exhibition, Al-Sarabah emphasized that the cooperation between the Department and the Jordanian Philatelic and Numismatic Society has extended since 2018, and over the past years, it has formed an active presence in various national occasions, within a partnership based on trust and common goals.

He stated that collecting stamps and coins goes beyond the concept of a hobby and entertainment to form a field for knowledge, culture, and history preservation, explaining that stamps and coins are considered "miniature documents" that store the nation's memory and document milestones in its journey, in addition to embodying its identity and symbols.

Al-Sarabah pointed out the importance of this hobby in developing a love for knowledge, patience, and precision among the youth, and connecting generations to their history and heritage, confirming that the National Library Department, as the home of national memory, is keen to host events that contribute to preserving cultural and historical memory and enhancing awareness of the importance of documentary collections.

He valued the efforts of the Jordanian Philatelic and Numismatic Society in holding the exhibition, praising the efforts of Mr. Jalil Tannous, the exhibition coordinator, in preparation and organization, and extending thanks to the participants from Jordan, Arab and foreign countries, and everyone who contributed to the success of the exhibition's activities.

In turn, the President of the Jordanian Philatelic and Numismatic Society, Mr. Jalil Tannous, confirmed that stamps and coins constitute a historical record and a national memory that reflects various aspects of the social, political, and economic life of nations.

He said that the hobby of collecting stamps and coins has become a global culture that transcends borders and contributes to introducing civilizational aspects and human values, and enhancing acquaintance, communication, and cooperation between peoples, noting that the importance of the hobby is not limited to acquiring pieces, but extends to cultural and historical documentation and building bridges of cooperation between societies.

Tannous explained that the Society works to document the bonds of cooperation and acquaintance between stamp and coin collectors inside and outside the Kingdom, and to pay attention to everything related to postage stamps and coins, in addition to organizing local and international exhibitions that contribute to developing the hobby and enhancing its cultural and intellectual presence.

Within the framework of the exhibition's activities, the President of the Stamp and Coin Collectors Center, Mr. Jalil Tannous Al-Attar, gave a lecture entitled "Preparing Stamp Displays and Judging Rules," during which he discussed the importance of specialized exhibitions in highlighting philatelic and numismatic collections, the foundations and rules adopted in preparing displays, and the mechanisms for their evaluation and judging.

The organization of the exhibition comes as an affirmation of the importance of documentary and cultural heritage, and highlighting the historical value of stamps and coins as evidence that preserves a part of national and human memory, and documents the stages of development and transformations that countries and societies have gone through.
