Death sentences issued for three men in Kuwait who planned to assassinate a minister

A court in Kuwait on Monday issued death sentences against three men on charges of plotting to assassinate the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, spying for Iran, and joining the Lebanese Hezbollah, according to two judicial sources told AFP.

According to the two sources, the Criminal Court sentenced the cleric and Secretary-General of the National Islamic Alliance, Hussein Abdullah Al-Maatouq, to death, along with two other individuals, one of whom had previously been convicted of terrorism in 2016 and then covered by an Amiri pardon, before being arrested again last April.

The sources added that the charges against the three men include harming the country's national interests, spying for Iran, plotting to assassinate the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, and joining Hezbollah, which Kuwait classifies as a terrorist organization.

Eleven other people tried in the same case were sentenced to five years in prison with hard labor.

Since the outbreak of the war in the Middle East, Gulf countries, including Kuwait, have detained dozens of people on suspicion of belonging to cells linked to Iran, mostly Shiite Muslims, at a time when the region was subjected to repeated Iranian shelling.
