The Madaba Governorate Public Works Directorate is welcoming the rainy season with full readiness after implementing a package of projects to address hotspots and rainwater accumulation sites through the execution of tenders worth (1.4) million dinars, which included the construction, rehabilitation, and expansion of vital, agricultural, and secondary roads in the governorate.
The Director of Madaba Public Works, Engineer Ahmed Al-Kasasbeh, told the Jordan News Agency (Petra) that the directorate’s staff carried out maintenance and cleaning work for about 590 box and pipe culverts distributed across the road network in the governorate, in addition to installing new culverts on agricultural and secondary roads to ensure their ability to drain rainwater and reduce its accumulation, soil erosion, and road closures.
He added that 600 linear meters of concrete barriers were installed in locations that experienced landslides and soil erosion during the last season, especially roads located in the Ma'in and Mukawir areas, to protect road users, enhance traffic safety, and reduce damages resulting from heavy rainfall, especially in rugged mountainous areas.
He indicated that the directorate has prepared its emergency plan for the winter season to deal with normal and extreme weather conditions, which includes forming 8 field emergency teams to cover all roads in the governorate, ensuring they remain in a state of emergency in the field to deal directly with any emergency, and are equipped with the necessary personnel and machinery.
He pointed out that the directorate has enhanced its readiness in terms of machinery and equipment by conducting necessary maintenance work and renting heavy machinery such as loaders, graders, and excavators, in addition to utilizing private sector machinery when needed, to ensure rapid response to emergency situations and deal with the repercussions of weather conditions, especially in areas experiencing flash floods or landslides on road shoulders.
Al-Kasasbeh explained that the directorate implemented 9 projects during the current year to construct, rehabilitate, and expand vital, agricultural, and secondary roads in various areas of the governorate, most notably the King's Highway extending from the Church of the Apostles towards the American University traffic lights in Madaba, which is nearing completion. It has been reconstructed, separated by a median island, illuminated, and fully provided with infrastructure works including culverts, water drains, and manholes.
The projects also included the expansion of the King's Highway towards Dhiban in the Al-Fass area for a length of two kilometers, funded by the Ministry of Public Works and Housing and implemented by the ministry's staff and machinery, as well as the reconstruction of the Al-Dalila-American University road from the governorate council's allocations, in addition to implementing a group of agricultural roads in Madaba and Dhiban, and supplying construction materials to improve roads and increase their efficiency.
He stated that the directorate implemented maintenance work for a number of secondary and branch roads in the governorate from the Ministry of Public Works budget worth 100 thousand dinars, in addition to opening agricultural roads in the Hawara area worth 80 thousand dinars, and opening and paving agricultural roads in the Lib and Mleiha areas worth 35 thousand dinars, which contribute to improving services provided to citizens and facilitating farmers' access to their lands.
Regarding the directorate's plan for the coming year, Al-Kasasbeh said that the directorate will work to complete road network development projects and address sites that need rehabilitation and expansion, within an estimated budget of (1.4) million dinars, aimed at improving infrastructure, enhancing traffic safety, and responding to service and development needs in the governorate.
He added that the plan includes completing the expansion, maintenance, rehabilitation, and lighting of the King's Highway in the Lib/Hureithin area, rehabilitating the entrance to the Madaba camp at the intersection of Ma'in with the Sixty Street, installing a traffic light to regulate traffic and reduce accidents, in addition to completing the second phase of the Al-Dalila/American University road reconstruction project.
The projects also include supplying construction materials and asphalt mixtures for the maintenance of main, secondary, and branch roads, and continuing to open and pave agricultural roads in various areas of the governorate, according to priorities and field needs.
