Freihat elected First Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives with 88 votes

On Monday, the 20th House of Representatives elected MP Ayatallah Freihat as First Deputy Speaker of the House for its third ordinary session, following a competition with MP Ahmad Al-Hmaisat, during the first session held by the House, chaired by MP Mousa Al-Wahsh.

Freihat received 88 votes, compared to 46 votes for his rival Al-Hmaisat, in the election for the First Deputy Speaker of the House.

The House of Representatives opened its first session under the chairmanship of MP Mousa Al-Wahsh, after MP Majhem Al-Sqour, the longest-serving member, declined to chair the session due to his desire to run for the speakership of the House.

Assisting Al-Wahsh in chairing the session were MPs Rand Al-Khazouz and Hamza Al-Toubasi, as they are the two youngest members present.

Following the election of its Speaker, the House of Representatives will complete the elections for the Permanent Bureau, which includes the First and Second Deputy Speakers and the Assistants to the Speaker.

Article 69 of the Jordanian Constitution stipulates that at the beginning of each ordinary session, the House of Representatives shall elect a Speaker for a period of one calendar year, and he may be re-elected.
