Belgium condemned the attack launched by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank on a European diplomatic convoy, which included French, Polish, and Belgian nationals.
Belgian Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib wrote on the (X) platform, "I condemn in the strongest terms the attack carried out by masked settlers in the town of Taybeh in the occupied West Bank, which targeted Palestinians, our Consul General, French and Polish diplomats, as well as representatives of the Catholic Church," noting that a French mayor was assaulted and a Belgian vehicle was damaged.
He added that "Palestinians face this violence daily," stressing that Israeli settlers are also targeting journalists and diplomats who report the news of these attacks.
Prevot affirmed that "reporting the news or performing diplomatic duties, or anyone for that matter, should not be subject to the risk of assault," stressing that the Israeli authorities, as an occupying power, are obligated to protect Palestinians, ensure the safety of diplomats and journalists, bring those responsible for the attack to justice, and put an end to the impunity of violent settlers.
He pointed out that Belgium will continue to push for European Union sanctions against those responsible for acts of violence and their supporters.
He said, "This violence cannot be separated from Israel's illegal settlement policy," recalling that Belgium condemns the expansion of illegal settlements and efforts aimed at the forced displacement of Palestinians from their lands, and emphasizing the necessity of ending the occupation in the Palestinian territories.
