The role of the Zakat Fund in Aqaba Governorate is not limited to providing financial assistance to needy families, but extends to include sponsoring orphans, supporting productive projects, and renovating homes, within a framework aimed at supporting eligible families and improving their living conditions in various regions and villages of the governorate.
The head of the Zakat Department in Aqaba, Hani Ashour, said that the fund provides monthly assistance to about 70 families in the governorate, in accordance with approved eligibility criteria and standards, ensuring that aid reaches the families that meet the requirements.
He added that the fund also sponsors about 40 orphans, with the monthly assistance amounting to about 30 dinars per orphan, and benefits continue according to approved conditions until the age of 18.
Ashour pointed out that the Zakat Fund works to promote the concept of economic empowerment by supporting productive projects for eligible families, with the aim of helping them find a source of income that enables them to rely on themselves and improve their economic conditions.
He explained that the grants allocated for productive projects range from 1,000 to 3,000 dinars, which are non-refundable grants, awarded according to specific conditions and criteria and after studying the applications and beneficiary cases.
He indicated that the fund was able, during 2026, to support four productive projects in Aqaba Governorate, as part of a trend aimed at expanding the scope of benefiting from Zakat funds and transforming them, wherever possible, into projects that provide sustainable income for families.
He pointed out that the fund's services also include the renovation of homes for eligible families, especially cases whose residences require maintenance or rehabilitation work, contributing to providing safer and more suitable housing conditions for family members.
Ashour confirmed that the scope of the Zakat Department's work includes all regions and villages of Aqaba Governorate, including remote areas, noting the importance of reaching those in need in various population centers and not limiting services to the center of Aqaba city.
This role reflects the diversity of the Zakat Fund's programs between monthly assistance, orphan sponsorship, economic empowerment, and home renovation, making Zakat a tool for social solidarity and supporting families facing difficult economic conditions, in addition to providing opportunities that help some families transition from relying on assistance to owning their own source of income.
