UNHCR: 355 Dinars additional assistance for Syrian families returning from Jordan

The spokesperson for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Jordan, Yousef Taha, said that the commission will expand its cash assistance program for Syrian refugees wishing to return voluntarily to Syria, effective October 18, 2026, by providing additional assistance of 355 dinars per family to help cover transportation costs.

Taha explained in a special statement to "Al-Mamlaka" that this step comes in response to feedback from refugees, who indicated that high transportation costs constitute one of the most prominent challenges they face when returning to Syria.

He indicated that the cash assistance provided to returnees includes 70 dinars for each individual with an active registration file with the commission, in addition to 355 dinars per family to help cover transportation costs, along with covering the costs of shipping their belongings, including furniture. Furthermore, the most vulnerable families who meet the approved eligibility criteria can receive additional assistance of 210 dinars per family.

Taha also clarified that the additional assistance of 210 dinars, equivalent to 300 dollars, is allocated to the most vulnerable families according to eligibility criteria that include families with persons with disabilities or serious health conditions, or children with special needs, in addition to families headed by single parents or caregivers, and families with eight or more members, in addition to the cash assistance provided to each returning individual.

The UNHCR had previously allowed Syrian refugees wishing to return voluntarily from the Zaatari and Azraq camps to Syria to sell the caravans they reside in, according to specific procedures.

According to the commission, selling the caravan is optional, as refugees can choose between selling it or returning it according to approved procedures, while authorized companies handle inspecting the caravans and providing price offers, which vary depending on the condition of each caravan.

Taha called on those wishing to register for voluntary return assistance or inquire about its details to contact the helpline at 064008000, confirming that all its services are free of charge.

The number of refugees and asylum seekers registered in Jordan reached 352,553 people as of early October 2026, with Syrians accounting for 329,720 of them, or 93.5% of the total registered.

The number of Syrian refugees registered with the commission who have returned voluntarily from Jordan to Syria, during the period from December 8, 2024, to October 3, 2026, reached more than 232,000 refugees, amid the continued movement of voluntary return to various Syrian governorates.
