US President Donald Trump rejected an Iranian proposal for a 7-day ceasefire, which includes mutual steps to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and resume navigation, according to US officials cited by the Wall Street Journal.
According to the officials, Trump informed his aides that he expects to resume bombing Iran after the congressional midterm elections in November, noting that his stance may change with the developments of the war and the election results.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said that Tehran, through intermediaries, presented a 7-day plan that includes halting hostilities, lifting the naval blockade on Iranian ports, easing restrictions on oil exports, and releasing frozen Iranian assets, with Iran reopening the Strait of Hormuz on the seventh day and resuming negotiations on its nuclear program thereafter.
Washington and Tehran continue indirect contacts through intermediaries, including Qatar, in an attempt to reach an agreement to end the war, while the Strait of Hormuz remains a key point in the negotiations, with the United States insisting on freedom of navigation and linking Iran's reopening of the Strait to easing the military and economic pressures imposed on it.
