Trump Invites Putin to G20 Summit in December

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Wednesday that President Donald Trump has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to participate in the G20 summit scheduled to be held in Miami in December.

The move comes amid stalled US efforts to reach an agreement to end the Russian invasion of Ukraine, while Trump emphasizes that he is working with both parties to stop the war.

Rubio said in a statement to journalists in New York, "To solve problems, we must meet with people we disagree with or may have differences with, and that's why we invited President Putin to the G20."

He added, "We believe it is an opportunity for him to communicate not only with President (Donald Trump), but also with other world leaders. We hope he will accept this invitation."

Rubio's remarks came after meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in New York, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meetings.

Zelensky is expected to renew his call to his country's allies to strengthen Ukrainian air defenses in the face of increasing Russian drone and missile attacks.

However, Lavrov told the UN Security Council on Wednesday that Moscow "will not suspend" its ongoing war in Ukraine, which has been ongoing for over four years.

He said, "We will not suspend our special military operation," referring to Russia's official description of the invasion it launched in 2022, accusing Europe of seeking to exploit any halt in the fighting to "supply the Kiev regime with weapons."

Rubio urged Russia and Ukraine on Wednesday to stop attacking each other's energy infrastructure.

He pointed out that this may not end the war, but it could provide a basis for reaching a broader agreement.

He noted that both sides have shown openness to a limited ceasefire limited to the energy sector.

Zelensky said in statements to journalists that Ukraine is ready to stop its strikes on Russian energy facilities if Moscow agrees to do the same, after Trump called on Kiev to stop targeting diesel refineries.

After meeting with Trump on Tuesday, Zelensky said that Washington and Kiev want to "end this senseless Russian war before winter."

The leaders of the United States and Russia have spoken on the phone on several occasions, but their last in-person meeting dates back to 2025.
