The US State Department announced on Tuesday that Secretary of State Marco Rubio will meet with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov on Wednesday morning, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meetings.
The meeting comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is set to address the General Assembly on the same day.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Ukrainian President announced his country's readiness to stop targeting Russian energy facilities if Moscow agrees to take a similar step.
However, he noted that he is not aware of Moscow's stance on the proposal, expressing hope that the "American side can find a way (...) to push it into any form of negotiations"
He pointed out that Washington and Kyiv want to end the war with Russia before winter, following a meeting he described as "positive" with his American counterpart Donald Trump.
Zelenskyy wrote on social media, "I had a positive and productive meeting with President Donald J. Trump at the UN General Assembly. The United States and Ukraine want to end this senseless Russian war before winter"
The war has been ongoing since Russia launched its military offensive against Ukraine in February 2022, while US efforts to end the conflict have stalled in recent months.
Russia and Ukraine have been exchanging long-range strikes that have been escalating in intensity and targeting an increasing number of civilian sites, including factories, warehouses, energy facilities, and ports, as well as ships in the Black Sea.
