The General Union of Charitable Societies Emphasizes the Importance of Caring for the Elderly and Enhancing Their Status in Society

The President of the General Union of Charitable Societies, Amer Al-Khawajdeh, affirmed that the International Day of Older Persons, which falls on the 1st of October each year, represents a national and humanitarian occasion to emphasize the importance of caring for the elderly, safeguarding their rights, and enhancing their participation in society, in appreciation of the efforts and experiences they have contributed to building the family, society, and the nation.

Al-Khawajdeh pointed out in a statement by the General Union of Charitable Societies on this occasion that the elderly represent a reservoir of experience, knowledge, and values, and that caring for them is a shared responsibility that requires the integration of efforts from official institutions, private entities, charitable societies, and civil society organizations, to provide them with a dignified and safe life and enhance their social integration.

He explained that charitable societies play an important role in serving the elderly through social and humanitarian programs and initiatives, and by providing assistance, care, and psychological and social support, emphasizing the importance of developing these programs to suit their needs and enhance the quality of their lives.

He said that the Union pays special attention to the elderly within its orientations and programs, and supports the efforts of charitable societies in various governorates of the Kingdom to provide the necessary services and support for them, calling for expanding the scope of partnerships with relevant parties to develop the services provided to this category.

Al-Khawajdeh stressed that the care of the elderly should not be limited to providing assistance, but should be based on empowering them, involving them, and benefiting from their experiences and expertise, to enhance their sense of appreciation and belonging and maintain their active role in society.

He pointed to the importance of raising community awareness about the rights of the elderly, confronting forms of neglect and social isolation they may face, and reinforcing the values of charity, solidarity, and compassion among community members, especially within the family as the primary environment for care and support.

Al-Khawajdeh called on institutions, bodies, and associations to continue implementing initiatives and programs targeting the elderly, and to enhance volunteer work directed at serving them, affirming that the attention to this category reflects the level of cohesion and solidarity in society, and embodies the humanitarian and social values that Jordan cherishes.

He emphasized the need to continue national efforts aimed at providing a suitable environment for the elderly and improving the level of health and social services provided to them, and enhancing their participation in public life, to ensure a dignified life commensurate with what they have given over the years of their service.
