The Syrian authorities announced on Sunday the dismantling of a cell affiliated with the "Daesh" terrorist organization and the seizure of explosive materials that they said were intended for the execution of "terrorist acts".
The Syrian News Agency (SANA) quoted the Internal Security Forces as saying that the General Intelligence Directorate, in cooperation with them, managed, following a "series of meticulous security operations", to dismantle a cell affiliated with the "Daesh" terrorist organization that was involved in carrying out kidnappings, planting explosive devices, and assassinations.
It added that the cell began its activity in Raqqa Governorate (northeast) and extended to Aleppo (north), Idlib (northwest), and Homs (central) Governorates.
The security forces pointed out that the operations resulted in the arrest of 4 of the cell's leaders in Raqqa, along with a number of its members in Aleppo, Idlib, and Homs, after tracking their activities and movements, in addition to seizing explosive materials that were intended for the execution of "terrorist acts".
It confirmed that the preliminary investigations revealed the involvement of the cell members in carrying out 5 kidnapping operations, in addition to planning to carry out acts targeting security and stability.
Earlier, the Syrian Ministry of Interior announced on July 9, 2026, the dismantling of "Daesh" cells in the southern region and the arrest of the leader Firas Al-Daghr, known as the "Governor of Lebanon and Palestine".
The ministry also announced at that time the arrest of 235 "terrorists" and the thwarting of 7 operations of the organization over 3 months, as part of the outcome of security operations carried out by the Counter-Terrorism Department in cooperation with the General Intelligence Directorate.
In November 2025, Damascus joined the international coalition to combat "Daesh", which was formed under the leadership of the United States in 2014 and carried out military operations against the organization in Syria and Iraq with the participation of several countries.
