A Sudanese human rights body announced on Tuesday that 10 people were killed and dozens injured as a result of a drone strike it attributed to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), targeting the courthouse in the city of Um Rawaba, North Kordofan state.
The "Emergency Lawyers" group stated: "We condemn in the strongest terms the targeting of the Um Rawaba court in North Kordofan state today by the Rapid Support Forces using a drone."
It added that "the initial toll of the attack indicates 10 people killed and dozens injured."
The group considered that "targeting judicial facilities and civilians represents a serious violation of international humanitarian law, undermines justice institutions, and puts the lives of staff and those present there at risk."
It noted that the attack reignites growing concerns regarding the safety of civilians and court staff across Sudan.
The group demanded an immediate halt to attacks on civilians and civilian and judicial facilities, an independent and transparent investigation into the attack, accountability for those responsible, and the guarantee of protection for justice sector workers, litigants, and judicial facilities.
It also called on all parties to the conflict to strictly adhere to international humanitarian law, protect civilians and civilian facilities, and respect the independence and safety of justice institutions.
There was no immediate comment from the Rapid Support Forces regarding the group's statement as of 13:20 (GMT).
On August 24, the United Nations stated that 1,100 civilians had been killed by drone attacks in Sudan during the period from January to June of this year.
Sudanese authorities and human rights organizations accuse the Rapid Support Forces of targeting civilian facilities, while the latter usually does not comment on these accusations, claiming it works to "protect civilians."
The three Kordofan states—North, West, and South—have been witnessing clashes between the army and the RSF since last October 25.
Since April 2023, the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces have been engaged in a war that has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands and the displacement of about 13 million people, according to UN and international estimates.
