Southern Syria.. A Strategic Investment for Jordan and Syria

Yes, what is happening is understandable cooperation between the two countries, especially since Israel has invested in the conditions witnessed in Syria to expand within Syrian territory, at a time when the situation in As-Suwayda Governorate has exploded, isolating it from the rest of Syria, and making Daraa, thus, the artery connecting Amman and Damascus. Amid these pressures, both sides are cooperating to clear the region of any objective conditions that could sever that connection at this critical stage.

Southern Syria has witnessed widespread armed conflicts, involving pro-Iranian militias and extremist groups linked to ISIS and Al-Qaeda organizations. The security situation in the south is being handled with caution, at a time when Syrians seem comfortable with the Jordanian monitoring of a vital region, because they are already preoccupied with settling situations in areas that were under the control of the Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces, and other pockets in the north, in addition to the critical situation in coastal areas, which include many forces sympathetic to the former regime for reasons related to its sectarian choices.

For these reasons, Syria did not object to the Jordanian intervention, which came surgically to work on containing the situation in the south. The information that Jordan has accumulated over years of monitoring the region was not, and perhaps much of it was not, available to the current Syrian government in Damascus, which did not take over the country's affairs in the necessary manner, and had to request assistance and support from countries that continued to follow events in Syria based on strategic and security interests, specifically Jordan and Turkey. Jordan's share was the southern regions adjacent to its borders.

The Jordanian role in southern Syria is an investment for both countries alike, because Damascus seeks to restore full sovereignty over its territory and get rid of security problems that could hinder its efforts towards reconstruction, especially since unstable conditions consume resources that should be employed in achieving economic stability, as security is a gateway to restoring employment levels in Syria. On the other hand, a safe south, with the entire region under Syrian sovereignty, relieves Jordan of the responsibility of mobilization on the border to confront any infiltration attempts by terrorists and combat the drug trade, alongside major files awaiting significant progress such as inter-trade and water.

Amman and Damascus dealt responsibly with the recent raid and its results, with an understanding that the matter should not escalate into a space of estrangement or taking negative, albeit temporary, positions. On the contrary, the necessary step is further coordination and developing a long-term strategy based on setting priorities on the ground, with mechanisms to evaluate progress regarding them, because the cost of instability in southern Syria is expensive for both brotherly countries.
