Safadi: The Israeli government is destroying peace opportunities.. and action must be taken to preserve the two-state solution

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi said on Thursday that the two-state solution is the only way to achieve peace in the region, stressing the need for immediate and effective action to preserve the chances of implementing this solution.

Safadi added, during his participation in the ministerial meeting of the International Coalition to Implement the Two-State Solution, on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, that the region cannot enjoy peace without fulfilling the right of the Palestinian people to freedom and the establishment of their independent sovereign state on their national soil.

He warned that the Israeli government could destroy the remaining chances for implementing the two-state solution if immediate and effective steps are not taken.

He said that Israel is working according to systematic policies to destroy the chances of achieving a just peace in the region, through the expansion of settlements, the confiscation of lands, the economic siege of the Palestinian people and their government, the closure of roads, and the attack on and violation of Islamic and Christian holy sites.

He pointed out that ministers in the Israeli government continue to spread a discourse of hatred that tries to strip Palestinians of their humanity, noting that Israeli ministers reject the two-state solution and call for the expulsion of Palestinians from their land, and refuse to recognize the right of Palestinians to life, freedom, and dignity.

Safadi stressed the need to take deterrent measures against the steps that undermine the two-state solution, primarily settlement, emphasizing the importance of using the tools provided by international law to deter the Israeli government from its course.

He said that the continuation of this course will keep the region a theater of war and conflict, and deprive all the peoples of the region, including Israel, of the right to live in security and peace.

Safadi also stressed the need to continue efforts that focus on the fact that there is no alternative to the two-state solution, and to work effectively to counter the measures that prevent the implementation of this solution.

He added that if the chances of implementing the two-state solution are lost, the alternative will be the 'condition' of a single state, not the'solution' of a single state, considering it a case of racial discrimination that cannot lead to peace.

He pointed out that what the region is facing is an occupation that is being perpetuated by the Israeli government daily, and the destruction of the future of five million Palestinians living under this occupation, stressing that the continued deprivation of their freedom and dignity will keep the region a theater of conflict.

Safadi said that everyone knows the way to achieve peace, and that there is a consensus that the two-state solution is the only way to achieve it, adding that the Israeli government alone is working against the implementation of this solution.

He emphasized that the Israeli government, through its actions and policies, stands between the region and achieving a just peace for all.
