The Russian Foreign Ministry summoned, on Tuesday, the Belgian ambassador to Moscow, Michel Gerebtzoff, against the backdrop of statements by Belgian officials portraying Russia as a threat to Europe.
This came according to a statement issued by the Russian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday.
The ministry stated that the Russian side categorically rejected, during the meeting, what it described as "baseless allegations," which have recently increased on the part of Belgian authorities regarding hybrid threats, sabotage activities, and direct military threats they claim are emanating from Russia.
The ministry emphasized that the explicit hostile statements by some Belgian officials, which deliberately portray Russia as an enemy, lead to "further escalation of tension and increase the risk of the atmosphere of confrontation they are fueling spiraling out of control."
It pointed out that Moscow called on the Belgian side to assess the repercussions of these statements and to curb the anti-Russian rhetoric, which contributes to increasing tension on the European continent.
