The Civil Defense Agency in the Gaza Strip announced on Wednesday the recovery of the remains of 101 Palestinians from under the rubble of destroyed homes in the "Crown Square" in the Yarmouk neighborhood in the center of Gaza City, after 17 days of search and recovery operations in cooperation with the Egyptian Committee.
The Civil Defense said in a statement that its teams "managed on Wednesday to recover the remains of 5 martyrs from under the rubble, bringing the total number of martyrs recovered from the square to 101".
It explained that the teams completed the search and recovery operations in Crown Square after completing work in the targeted area.
It pointed out that ceremonies will be held to bury the bodies of the martyrs who were recovered, and the date of the funeral will be announced in the coming days.
According to the statement, the search and recovery operations lasted 17 days in cooperation with the Egyptian Committee.
The Egyptian Relief Committee in the Gaza Strip has been working since the beginning of the genocidal war launched by Israel on October 7, 2023, to support the Palestinian people, provide humanitarian aid, and meet the urgent needs of the population, amid successive crises.
This comes within the ongoing search operations under the second phase of the "Recovering the Bodies of Martyrs" project launched by the Civil Defense on July 19 last, with the aim of recovering the remains of the missing buried under the rubble of buildings destroyed by Israel, despite the limited capabilities and mechanisms available to the teams.
The second phase includes search operations under the rubble of homes in Gaza City, northern the Strip, and Nuseirat Camp in central the Strip.
The recovery operations are proceeding very slowly due to the lack of necessary equipment, despite the ceasefire agreement in effect in Gaza since October 10, 2025, which, according to Palestinian sources, stipulated the entry of heavy equipment and machinery to help remove the rubble and recover the victims.
In October 2025, the Government Media Office announced that the number of Palestinian missing persons since the start of the Israeli war on Gaza was about 9,500, including those whose bodies are still under the rubble of destroyed buildings, and others whose fate remains unknown.
The second phase of the "Recovering the Bodies of Martyrs" project is being implemented over 800 hours of work and includes searching for the bodies of missing persons under the rubble of 147 destroyed homes in the Gaza, northern, and central governorates, believed to contain 1,072 bodies, according to previous data from the Civil Defense.
The first phase of the project was launched at the end of November 2025, during which about 333 bodies and remains were recovered from a total of 559 missing persons from under the rubble of 54 homes and buildings.
Since October 8, 2023, Israel, with American support, has been committing genocide in Gaza, leaving more than 73,000 Palestinian dead and over 174,000 injured, and causing damage to 90 percent of the infrastructure.
