Petra: Agricultural Wells Enhance Green Spaces

Citizen Ali Al-Hasanat managed to find a sustainable water source that helps him irrigate his crops and trees, after the Ministry of Agriculture agreed to fund him to establish a well in his agricultural land adjacent to his home.

Al-Hasanat says that establishing the well played an important role in finding a sustainable water source, which enables him to preserve his crops and motivates him to expand agriculture, appreciating this step by the Petra Agriculture Directorate and the Ministry of Agriculture.

Al-Hasanat adds that this type of project will play a very important role in encouraging farmers to continue taking care of their land, especially since the problem of water scarcity is the most prominent challenge faced by farmers in the Petra region, and that by establishing this type of well, this challenge is overcome.

This project encouraged the success of the experience of a number of farmers, many citizens in the governorate to apply for it, as citizen Muhammad Al-Hamadan intends to revive a large area of land he owns, by applying to the Petra Agriculture Directorate, in order to contribute to funding it to establish a well in it.

Al-Hamadan confirms that ensuring a sustainable water source encourages the revival of various crops in the region, especially since it has lands with soil suitable for seasonal crops and many types of trees such as olives, figs, almonds, and citrus fruits.

The head of the Agricultural Projects Section at Petra Agriculture, Engineer Manar Al-Touissi, says: One of the most important projects presented by the Ministry of Agriculture, represented by the Petra Governorate Agriculture Directorate, to serve the farmers of the region, are the water harvesting projects, represented by funding wells.

Al-Touissi added that the fluctuation of rainfall in recent times has had an impact on the sustainability of trees, so these projects were introduced, which depend on water harvesting, whether from rain or other water sources such as springs and wells.

She explained that the Ministry provides grants worth 1500 dinars for each farmer who is approved for funding to establish an agricultural well, provided that he establishes a well or a concrete tank with a capacity of 30 cubic meters, in order to store rainwater or water harvesting.

She pointed out that about 8 farmers have benefited from these projects in the first phase, and that 6 other farmers will be funded in the next phase to establish agricultural wells.

This project has also contributed to preserving the native trees that the region is famous for, such as fig and Roman and local olive trees, in addition to its role in preserving and enhancing green spaces.
