The Directorate of Agriculture of Petra District held a celebration on Sunday to launch Petra as the Jordanian Olive Capital for 2026, in honor of the importance of the olive tree and its role in supporting the agricultural sector and enhancing economic and social development in the region.
The Secretary-General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Muhammad Al-Hayari, told "Al-Mamlaka": "The launch of this project comes as an appreciation for Petra and support for its people. This project comes to complete the development journey and highlight the importance of Petra and its agricultural and tourist potential, which contributes to supporting farmers and enhancing local agricultural products."
Al-Hayari added that the Ministry is in the process of signing a memorandum of understanding with the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority in various sectors such as supporting livestock, afforestation, and agricultural extension, which will lead to the development of the agricultural sector in the district.
The celebration included a number of activities that highlighted the importance of olive cultivation, the role of farmers in maintaining and developing this sector, and an introduction to the agricultural potential of the Petra region, in addition to an exhibition of traditional and rural products.
Participants emphasized the importance of choosing Petra as the Jordanian Olive Capital for 2026, as it represents an opportunity to promote local agricultural products, support farmers, and enhance the presence of Jordanian olive oil in local and foreign markets.
The launch of the initiative is part of the Ministry of Agriculture's efforts to support the agricultural sector and preserve the olive tree as an integral part of Jordan's agricultural heritage and identity.
