Palestinian Foreign Minister to the Kingdom: What is happening in Gaza and the West Bank are factors driving the Palestinian people away

Palestinian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Varsen Aghabekian Shahin, said on Tuesday that the speech of His Majesty King Abdullah II before the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly was "very strong and carried the Palestinian burden and right," confirming that His Majesty's talk about the Palestinian cause and the dangers of continued escalation in the region constitutes support and backing for the Palestinian position.

Shahin added on Tuesday evening that His Majesty the King criticized the international community for containing Israeli violations instead of confronting them, spoke about forced displacement and described it as a war crime, and warned against erasing the Palestinian presence, stressing that the speech emphasized supporting Palestinian steadfastness and raised questions about the value of international law if it is ignored without accountability.

She pointed out that the requirements for sustainable peace were present in His Majesty the King's speech, alongside warnings against annexation, settler terrorism, the abuse of Palestinians in the West Bank, and daily violations in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Shahin said that His Majesty the King's position is not new, as he has always focused on the importance of ending the occupation and Palestinian suffering, adding that Palestinians today are "in dire need" of voices that clearly raise the Palestinian suffering and push towards ending the occupation.

She continued that His Majesty the King also warned that the occupation threatens neighboring countries, considering that the "expansionist" occupation threatens the entire region and places the international community before its political, legal, and moral responsibilities.

In her talk about displacement, Shahin said that "displacement has been ongoing since 1948," and that the pace of Israeli measures aimed at displacing Palestinians has escalated in various forms, pointing to a war of extermination in the Gaza Strip, land annexation and the spread of settlements in the West Bank, the strangulation of occupied Jerusalem, in addition to the humanitarian catastrophe in the Strip, settler terrorism in the West Bank, and economic restrictions and closures.

She confirmed that these violations represent factors driving the Palestinian people away, stressing the necessity of "calling everything by its name," and adding that the Israeli authorities, according to her, propose what they call "voluntary migration" as part of justifying their measures.

Shahin added that the situation is "worsening daily," and that what is required is "immediate intervention" and raising the voice, as His Majesty the King did, to stop what is happening in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Regarding the West Bank, Shahin said that there is "greater awareness" of what is happening in both the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, stressing that the world must realize that Israeli policy, according to her description, is based on displacing Palestinians and not just occupying the land.

She affirmed that the Palestinian cause is a "collective and global responsibility," and that Palestinians will not abandon their right to self-determination, freedom, and the embodiment of their state on the land of Palestine, pointing to the continuation of diplomatic work in various international forums, in cooperation with allies and friends, including the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

Regarding the participation of the Palestinian leadership in the United Nations proceedings, Shahin said that the Palestinian side expressed its strong rejection of what she described as the targeting of its right to participate, adding that other friendly countries also expressed their rejection, and confirmed that this measure, according to her position, contradicts the law and protocol governing the work of the United Nations in the host country.

Shahin considered that preventing the Palestinian leadership from participating contradicts the importance of the Palestinian cause in United Nations meetings, and also contradicts, according to her, the talk about peace and the right of the Palestinian people, and she saw that the decision does not support the peace process, but rather reinforces, according to her description, the forces rejecting a political solution and clinging to the continuation of occupation, annexation, settlement, and violations.
