The national men's sevens rugby team continues to intensify its physical, technical, and tactical training in preparation for the Asia Rugby Sevens Championship - UAE Cup 2026 for the West and Central Asia regions. The tournament will be hosted by the Jordan Rugby Committee at Ayla Oasis in Aqaba on Friday and Saturday, November 6th and 7th, with the participation of 14 teams representing nine Asian countries.
The tournament features men's competitions with nine teams participating: Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Kyrgyzstan, and Pakistan, while the women's competition includes teams from: Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq.
National men's team coach, Ahmed Hamouqa, confirmed that preparations for the tournament began according to an intensive training program, coinciding with Jordan hosting this Asian event and the significant responsibility placed on the players. He noted the expansion of the initial player selection pool after subjecting them to a training program that lasted three months, consisting of 12 training sessions per week.
Hamouqa explained that the program included skill and tactical training on the pitch, as well as outdoor physical training in the streets of the capital, Amman, and in the gym, with the aim of raising physical fitness levels and enhancing the technical readiness of the players. He pointed out that the lack of a grass pitch was one of the most prominent challenges for the technical staff, as most training sessions were held on artificial turf, which imposed additional challenges, particularly regarding injury prevention. He noted that the team was able to hold only one training session on a grass pitch in the Jawa area, thanking the management for providing the opportunity, as the session proved to be an important benefit within the preparation program.
Hamouqa praised the players' commitment and discipline throughout the preparation period, despite the challenges and life commitments they face, considering that this reflects the mental toughness and determination possessed by the team members. He stressed that the initial squad, which includes 24 players, will be announced 72 hours before the tournament begins.
For his part, national team player Ismail Janbek emphasized that Jordan hosting the tournament for the first time gives the participation special importance and boosts the players' ambitions to perform at the highest levels and represent the nation in a manner worthy of this hosting. He stressed the team's aspiration to compete for top positions and achieve the desired results, calling on Jordanian fans to attend and support the team in its competitions in Aqaba, confirming that their support will have a significant positive impact on motivating the players and urging them to give their best.
In turn, the Secretary-General of the Jordan Rugby Committee, Aziz Abu Khalaf, affirmed that the committee has worked over the past period to intensify the national teams' external participation in Asian and European championships, with the aim of increasing exposure, gaining experience, and enhancing technical readiness. He noted that the team has a high degree of preparedness and that ambitions are focused on competing for the title on home soil in front of Jordanian fans.
Abu Khalaf expressed his confidence in the national talent working within the coaching staff, emphasizing that the committee places great importance on providing preparation requirements, which contributes to achieving the aspirations of the Jordanian rugby family during upcoming fixtures.
