Lufthansa announced that a flight from Frankfurt to Lisbon was diverted to Lyon, France, after a portable battery caught fire on board.
The incident occurred on Saturday on an Airbus (A321-200) carrying 198 passengers en route to the Portuguese capital.
A company spokesperson said that the crew immediately dealt with the incident, placing the battery in a protective case designed for lithium batteries, and confirmed that there were no injuries.
The captain decided to divert the flight to Lyon as a precautionary measure.
Passengers resumed their journey to Lisbon on Sunday after spending the night in a hotel.
The company emphasized that "the safety of passengers and crew is our top priority"
Lufthansa had banned the use of external batteries or charging them on board its aircraft as of January, although passengers are allowed to carry up to two batteries in the cabin under specific safety conditions.
