Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced on Thursday that 630 drones were heading toward the Russian capital overnight, confirming that air defenses shot down most of them, while two people were injured as a result of the attack in an area outside the city.
Reuters quoted Sobyanin as saying, via the "Telegram" app, that Russian air defenses repelled the attack, without providing additional details regarding the extent of the damage or the locations targeted by the drones.
The attack comes in light of escalating mutual airstrikes between Russia and Ukraine, and the expansion of operations targeting areas far from the front lines.
Russian authorities announced on Wednesday the death of a 19-year-old man and the injury of two others in a drone attack that targeted a car in the Bryansk region in western Russia.
Reuters quoted the regional governor, Yegor Kovaltchuk, as saying that the attack was carried out by a Ukrainian drone, without the agency being able to independently verify the Russian account.
