Hundreds of drones attack Moscow, killing two and damaging an oil refinery

Russian authorities reported that Moscow and its surroundings were attacked by hundreds of drones on Sunday morning, resulting in the death of two people and causing damage to a major oil refinery, on the last day of the Russian parliamentary elections.

Moscow region governor Andrei Vorobiev said that 249 drones were intercepted in an attack that caused damage in several residential areas.

He wrote on Telegram around 3:00 a.m. local time that the "attack is ongoing," noting the deaths of two people, a 44-year-old woman and an elderly man, in two different areas.

In a third site affected by the attack, 400 people were evacuated due to a fire that broke out after a drone hit a building, according to Vorobiev.

For his part, the mayor of the Russian capital, Sergei Sobyanin, mentioned in a series of Telegram posts that air defenses shot down at least 186 drones.

The source of the drones was not specified, but these attacks come at a time when Ukraine has intensified its strikes deep within Russian territory in recent months in response to Russia's escalation of its strikes, particularly targeting energy facilities and logistical infrastructure.

Sobyanin added that a facility in the Moscow oil refinery area was damaged, confirming that no casualties have been reported at present and that relief teams are on site.

This refinery has been hit by Ukrainian strikes in recent months.

The attack occurred on the third and final day of the Russian parliamentary elections, in which President Vladimir Putin's party, 'United Russia,' is expected to win.

It also takes place despite U.S. President Donald Trump's confirmation on Monday that Ukraine and Russia have pledged to stop targeting each other's energy infrastructure.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Kyiv is ready to take 'de-escalation steps' if Russia does the same, in a gesture that the Kremlin considered a 'good idea'.

Zelenskyy announced that he intends to meet Trump next week in New York, expressing hope for resuming direct talks with Russia after the parliamentary elections, while the Kremlin did not rule out a meeting in October.
