Russia announces the downing of 902 Ukrainian drones overnight

Russia announced on Wednesday that it had shot down 902 Ukrainian drones overnight, including 180 near Moscow.

The Russian Ministry of Defense said in a statement that "air defense systems destroyed 902 Ukrainian drones overnight" over about 20 Russian regions and the Crimean Peninsula, which Moscow annexed.

The mayor of the capital, Sergei Sobyanin, reported in a post on the Telegram app that "180 drones were destroyed as they approached Moscow."

This is one of the largest numbers of drones to target Moscow in recent weeks.

The attacks significantly disrupted operations at Moscow airports, with work at Vnukovo Airport suspended for more than eight hours, according to the relevant authorities.

In Ukraine, authorities announced that Russian strikes, which specifically targeted energy infrastructure, killed at least 6 people overnight and caused power outages in several regions of Kyiv.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russian strikes left 600,000 people without electricity, noting that Moscow deliberately ignored the "energy ceasefire" announced by US President Donald Trump.

The Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed in a statement that it had carried out a "large-scale strike with high-precision weapons" on Tuesday night into Wednesday against "energy and communications infrastructure sites" in Kyiv and its region and in Kharkiv, noting that all targets serve military interests.

US President Donald Trump had announced on Sunday an "energy ceasefire" between Russia and Ukraine, two days after announcing an agreement with Moscow to deliver large quantities of Russian diesel to the United States and global markets.

The Kremlin refused on Monday to confirm whether such a truce had been agreed upon.

For his part, the Ukrainian president confirmed that the agreement is not effective. He said on Wednesday that "the (Russian) strike was completely deliberate and expressive in its scope," adding that Moscow "has never before shown such blatant disregard for the United States."
