The Greater Irbid Municipality has issued an urgent awareness appeal to citizens and residents in various areas of the municipality, calling on them to adhere to environmental instructions and stop negative practices that lead to the blockage of rainwater drainage lines and "grilles," with the arrival of the winter season.
The Director of the Environment Directorate at the Greater Irbid Municipality, Engineer Yahya Al-Omari, said that protecting the city from the repercussions of rain and flooding is a shared societal responsibility that requires the concerted efforts of everyone alongside the municipality's field staff.
Al-Omari warned against the random dumping of waste, bags, dry leaves, and branch clippings, in addition to prohibiting the disposal of any solid or liquid materials in the streets, stressing that these materials accumulate inside drainage openings and traps and contribute directly to blocking them during heavy rainfall, which causes the formation of torrents and the flooding of streets and public squares.
The Environment Director explained that maintaining the flow of rainwater within the drainage networks achieves key environmental, service, and health goals, summarized by preventing water accumulation on roads, avoiding floods and material damage, in addition to preserving the safety of citizens and their property and maintaining the visual and aesthetic cleanliness of the city of Irbid.
Al-Omari concluded his statement by commending the citizens, saying: "With your contribution and noble awareness, we prevent flooding and keep our city safe and clean. The municipality and its staff are dedicated to serving you, but the success of emergency plans depends primarily on the conscious environmental behavior of all residents."
