Greater Amman Municipality completes its preparations for the rainy season and readies its personnel and machinery to deal with weather depressions

The Greater Amman Municipality confirmed the completion of cleaning works for rainwater drainage manholes, culverts, torrent channels, and valleys, and the raising of the readiness of its personnel and machinery to deal with weather depressions, noting the provision of suction pumps distributed across the capital's 22 districts, and the activation of emergency plans and round-the-clock shifts during severe weather conditions.

The Municipality explained that its preparations for the rainy season include continuing to inspect drainage networks, tunnels, and submersible pumps, in addition to implementing engineering studies and projects to address locations that experienced a rise in water levels during previous seasons, and strengthening coordination with relevant authorities to ensure rapid response to reports and emergency cases.

The Greater Amman Municipality indicated that, at the end of the last rainy season, it began cleaning torrent channels, open valleys, culvert inlets and outlets, and rainwater drainage lines and manholes in various districts of the capital, using specialized machinery and field personnel to ensure water flow and reduce blockages.

It confirmed the completion of cleaning manholes, culverts, and torrent channels, with continued inspection works, re-installation of manhole covers and grates, and verification of the integrity and readiness of lines, in addition to cleaning tunnels and inspecting water drainage lines and submersible pumps within them.

Regarding field readiness, the Municipality explained that the volume of personnel, machinery, and equipment being prepared depends on the nature of the weather condition and the declared level of emergency, as the preparations include suction pumps, submersible pumps, and specialized machinery, in addition to machinery designated for snow removal and securing roads when necessary.

It added that the 22 districts of the Municipality are equipped with suction pumps for use in emergency cases and locations that experience a rise in water levels, in addition to providing pumps of various sizes to the relevant departments, allowing for the handling of water accumulations according to the requirements of each site.

Regarding the areas most susceptible to rainwater accumulation, the Municipality indicated that this is linked to the intensity and volume of rainfall, explaining that the areas of Wadi Al-Seer, Marj Al-Hamam, Al-Muqabalain, Al-Bunayyat, and Khirbet Al-Souq experienced a rise in water levels in previous seasons as a result of heavy rainfall.

It stated that it has prepared the necessary technical studies and issued specialized tenders to implement box culverts that can accommodate the increase in rainwater quantities, with the aim of improving drainage efficiency and addressing locations where water accumulations recur.

The Municipality confirmed that emergency plans include identifying hot spots, distributing personnel and machinery to locations expected to be affected, and monitoring the developments of weather conditions, to ensure rapid access to locations experiencing a rise in water levels or receiving complaints regarding them.

In severe weather conditions, the Municipality declares a state of maximum emergency and divides its personnel into two 12-hour shifts to ensure the continuity of field work around the clock in various districts of the capital.

It also pointed to the existence of joint coordination mechanisms with the Public Security Directorate, the Civil Defense, the Ministry of Public Works and Housing, and the National Center for Security and Crisis Management, in addition to emergency rooms in the Ministry of Interior and the Capital Governorate, which contributes to exchanging information, unifying efforts, and accelerating response to incidents.

The Greater Amman Municipality called on citizens to report water accumulations, manhole blockages, and observations related to roads via the unified call center at 102 or 117180, confirming that reports are forwarded to the relevant departments and districts for follow-up and to take the necessary measures.

It stressed the importance of adhering to public safety guidelines, primarily not connecting rainwater gutters to the sewage network, ensuring the readiness of submersible pumps in homes, especially in basements located below street level, taking necessary measures to prevent water from entering buildings, as well as avoiding torrent channels and not risking crossing flooded roads.

It is worth noting that the Greater Amman Municipality continues to implement its preventive and technical measures in preparation for the rainy season, through maintaining water drainage networks, raising the readiness of personnel and machinery, implementing engineering solutions in affected locations, and strengthening coordination with relevant authorities, with the aim of reducing the effects of heavy rainfall and maintaining the safety of citizens and the flow of traffic in the capital.
