The agreement, signed during a high-level ceremony hosted by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research in Berlin, formally elevates the deep-rooted and fundamental partnership between Germany and SESAME, the first major international research center in the Middle East.
Toukan said that Germany's elevation of its relationship with SESAME to associate membership brings a balanced weight in advanced science to the center's family, enhancing joint research opportunities, knowledge transfer, and leading technical integration in fields such as structural biology, materials science, environmental studies, and cultural heritage. He explained that the agreement carries diplomatic weight, as a firm endorsement of scientific diplomacy and cross-border cooperation.
Toukan highlighted how this membership will serve as a powerful beacon of hope for regional cooperation, saying, "It is a resounding endorsement of scientific diplomacy as a tool for global stability," as Germany's contribution is not limited to funding a scientific facility; it is an effective investment in an oasis of peace, dialogue, and stability in the Middle East.
Bleier spoke about Germany's long-standing commitment to promoting advanced innovation and cross-border stability, adding, "Science knows no borders, and scientific diplomacy is more important than ever, and Germany is proud to formalize its commitment to SESAME, an institution whose physical foundation is linked to our shared scientific history."
He explained that the membership is an investment not only in global, cross-border research paths from structural biology to green energy but also in the vital stability and prosperity of the Middle East through peaceful cooperation.
For his part, Jordanian Ambassador to Germany Fayez Al-Khouri said that Germany's accession to SESAME embodies the shared belief of the two countries that science is a bridge for communication and rapprochement between nations, especially as this partnership paves the way for new horizons of cooperation, trust-building, research, and joint discovery, in our region and beyond.
He added, "We look forward to strengthening and building on this partnership in the coming years, as SESAME continues to bring together scientists from across the region around a common goal of expanding the horizons of knowledge and serving scientific progress," explaining that this agreement will contribute to ensuring that the next generation of physicists, engineers, and young researchers have the global support, tools, and networks needed to uncover the secrets of matter, while building sustainable bridges of understanding in today's world.
