Jordan participated in the 70th regular session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), held in the Austrian capital, Vienna, from September 14 to 18, with a delegation headed by the Chairman of the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission, Khaled Toukan.
According to a statement by the commission on Wednesday, Toukan affirmed in Jordan's speech during the meetings the Kingdom's continued work with steady steps and an integrated strategic vision to develop the nuclear energy program. This includes expanding the uses of the Jordan Research and Training Reactor (JRTR), exploring and mining uranium ores, and developing and qualifying national cadres, leading to the employment of advanced nuclear plants for electricity generation and water desalination.
Toukan provided a summary of the achievements represented by the Jordan Research and Training Reactor, noting the intention to introduce neutron transmutation doping technology for high-purity silicon crystals, which contributes to consolidating Jordan's position as a regional hub for semiconductor material production.
Toukan praised the scientific role of the SESAME center and the center's possession of six operational beamlines in advanced research fields, noting the accession of Germany and Italy this year as participating members.
Toukan valued the Agency's support for Jordan through the Technical Cooperation Program, especially the "Rays of Hope" initiative, which contributed to providing Al-Bashir Hospital and Jordan University Hospital with PET/CT scanners.
The participating Jordanian delegation met with the Director General of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, and discussed with him expanding ways of cooperation between the Atomic Energy Commission and the relevant departments in the Agency to support the Jordanian nuclear program.
Toukan valued the Agency's significant support for Jordan, reviewing Jordan's efforts in developing the research reactor to expand the production of radioisotopes, in addition to plans to introduce Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) for electricity generation and water desalination, and moving forward with uranium production at a commercial level, confirming during the meeting that Jordan is close to making strategic decisions in nuclear energy applications and water desalination.
For his part, Grossi confirmed the IAEA's continued support for Jordan and the importance of preparing a national plan to combat cancer. He recommended benefiting from the uranium production cycle review and assessment mission organized by the Agency to develop uranium projects in member states, and his follow-up on the research reactor and radioisotope production projects, noting that Jordan represents a successful model of fruitful cooperation with the Agency.
During the conference, the Jordanian delegation met separately with the Deputy Directors General of the Agency, where they expressed their satisfaction with the cooperation between the Agency and Jordan, and their readiness to support the efforts made by the Jordanian side, and the adoption of Jordan as a leading country in the region and a specialized training platform for the peaceful uses of atomic energy.
On the sidelines of the General Conference, Toukan participated in an event titled "Nuclear Threat Initiative" and the signing of the framework for the Research Reactor Network in the Asia-Pacific region.
The Jordanian Ambassador to the Agency, Mohammad Hindawi, also participated in an event titled "Strengthening Global Cancer Care," which focused on the most prominent achievements of the reference centers for the "Rays of Hope" initiative, noting that the King Hussein Cancer Center is one of the first centers to be accredited under this initiative.
During the General Conference, the Jordanian delegation met with several official and private international entities, in addition to holding numerous meetings with IAEA experts to enhance bilateral cooperation with those entities.
