The agreement, signed during a high-level ceremony hosted by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research in Berlin, represents an official elevation of a deep-rooted and essential partnership between Germany and SESAME, which is the first major international research center in the Middle East.
Toukan stated that Germany's elevation of its relationship with SESAME to associate membership introduces significant weight in advanced sciences to the center's family, enhancing opportunities for joint research, knowledge transfer, and pioneering technical integration in fields such as structural biology, materials science, environmental studies, and cultural heritage. He explained that the agreement carries diplomatic weight as a firm endorsement of science diplomacy and cross-border cooperation.
Toukan highlighted how this membership will serve as a powerful beacon of hope for regional cooperation, stating, "It is a resounding endorsement of science diplomacy as a tool for global stability," noting that Germany's contribution is not merely funding a scientific facility, but an active investment in an oasis of peace, dialogue, and stability in the Middle East.
For his part, Fleier spoke about Germany's long-standing commitment to fostering cutting-edge innovation and cross-border stability, adding, "Science knows no borders, and science diplomacy has never been more important. Germany is proud to formalize its commitment to SESAME, an institution whose physical foundation is tied to our shared scientific history."
He explained that the membership is an investment not only in global cross-border research pathways—from structural biology to green energy—but also in the vital stability and prosperity of the Middle East through peaceful cooperation.
Meanwhile, Jordan's Ambassador to Germany, Fayez Al-Khouri, stated that Germany's joining of SESAME embodies the two countries' shared belief that science is a bridge for communication and rapprochement among nations, especially as this partnership paves the way for new horizons of cooperation, trust-building, joint research, and discovery in our region and beyond.
He added, "We look forward to strengthening and building upon this partnership in the coming years, as SESAME continues to bring together scientists from across the region around a common goal of expanding the horizons of knowledge and serving scientific progress." He pointed out that this agreement will help ensure that the next generation of young physicists, researchers, and engineers possess the global support, tools, and networks needed to unlock the mysteries of matter while building sustainable bridges of understanding in today's world.
