New Zealand police said in a statement on Tuesday that the Flydubai co-pilot who stabbed the pilot in what was rumored to be an attempt to bring down the plane last week was in New Zealand to complete part of his flight training for a UK-based company.
The police explained that the man was residing in New Zealand from November 2018 to May 2019 under a six-month student visa.
The UAE Attorney General, Hamad Saif Al-Shamsi, previously announced that investigations into the Flydubai incident revealed that the co-pilot had initiated a "terrorist operation" during the flight.
Al-Shamsi said that the co-pilot assaulted the pilot inside the cockpit using an "emergency axe" and attempted to take control of the aircraft's controls, as part of a plan that the investigations showed he was seeking to implement during the flight.
He added that the investigations are still ongoing to uncover the circumstances, motives, and connections related to the incident, alongside completing technical examinations and inspecting material and digital evidence.
He explained that the final results will be announced once the necessary procedures are completed.
