AFP: Flydubai co-pilot was banned from flying in Oman

Several international media outlets reported on Saturday that the Omani co-pilot who stabbed the captain of a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv was banned from flying in his country due to suspicion of adopting extremist views.

The media reported that Omani authorities prevented the co-pilot from flying for security reasons, believing he was influenced by extremist groups during a trip to Syria.

Media reports explained that the attacker joined Flydubai after leaving his job at Oman Air and failing to secure a position at Emirates.

The attack occurred on Wednesday on a Flydubai plane carrying 172 passengers, including 166 Israelis and crew members, on a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, where the co-pilot stabbed the Indian captain, who despite being injured, managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew to subdue the attacker.

The plane made an emergency landing at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia.

The circumstances and motives of the attack are not yet clear, while the United Arab Emirates, where the pilot and co-pilot were transferred, is conducting an investigation into the incident.
