Emergency Session at the Security Council on Developments in the Yemeni Bab al-Mandab

The United Nations Security Council held an emergency session last night to discuss the developments in the Bab al-Mandab. During the session, they listened to a briefing from Khaled Khiari, Deputy Head of the Department of Political and Peacekeeping Operations.

Khiari emphasized that the developments around the Bab al-Mandab highlight the urgent need to prevent the conflict in Yemen from further threatening the security of the Red Sea and the vital international waterway, calling for continued engagement aimed at reducing tensions, preventing further escalation, and protecting freedom of navigation.

He stressed the necessity for the parties involved in Yemen to prioritize dialogue and to engage constructively with the UN-led efforts to reach a political settlement through negotiation.

Khiari said that the Houthis continued their advance towards the Bab al-Mandab, where reports indicated that they had taken control of several islands in the southern Red Sea, noting that maritime navigation tracking sites showed that commercial shipping traffic through the Red Sea was currently unaffected.

The session included remarks from the ambassadors of Saudi Arabia and Yemen, as well as members of the Security Council.
