Campaign to combat ((termites)) in schools in Tafilah

Official and service institutions in Tafilah Governorate are intensifying their field efforts to confront the spread of the "termite" insect in a number of the governorate's schools, as part of a proactive campaign aimed at protecting infrastructure and educational property, and providing a healthy and safe study environment for students and teaching staff.

Scientifically, the termite is classified as a structural pest that requires early control, as it lives in secret underground colonies and feeds primarily on "cellulose" found in wood, paper, office furniture, and traditional ceilings.

The scientific danger of this insect lies in its ability to penetrate concrete joints and build invisible mud tunnels that extend inside walls and floors, which leads to the gradual erosion of wooden structures and main supports without being noticed early.

The Director of Education for the Tafilah region, Omran Al-Lasasmeh, confirmed that the directorate is following up with great interest on all observations and field reports received from school principals regarding the appearance of termite hotspots in some educational facilities, noting that the relevant cadres in the directorate will carry out spraying campaigns in cooperation with the concerned authorities. For his part, the head of the Greater Tafilah Municipality Committee, Dr. Mohammad Al-Karimeen, revealed that the municipality and its staff are fully prepared to provide comprehensive spraying services and approved pesticides to eliminate termite hotspots in all affected schools and educational facilities.

Al-Karimeen explained that field spraying operations are carried out exclusively during the weekend, and upon an official request from the Directorate of Education, to stay completely away from students and administrative and teaching staff, and to ensure the ventilation of classrooms and the dissipation of chemical residues of pesticides before the resumption of official working hours on Sunday morning.

Some school principals in Tafilah confirmed that they had observed clear traces of holes and mud tunnels caused by termites in old wooden doors and warehouses, noting that the confrontation requires digging the soil surrounding the building and injecting it with specialized pesticides to prevent the insect from rising from underground shelters.
