The Arab League condemned the attack on the liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier "Al Mayeda," owned by Qatar Gas Transport Company Limited "Nakilat," while it was sailing in the Arabian Gulf.
In a statement, the League affirmed that targeting commercial vessels endangers the safety of maritime navigation and ship crews, and contradicts the rules of international law, expressing its solidarity with the State of Qatar and its support for efforts aimed at uncovering the circumstances of the incident and identifying those responsible for it.
It stressed the necessity of respecting freedom of navigation, ensuring the safety of ships, and protecting international trade, and warned of the repercussions of repeating such attacks on the security of energy supplies and market stability, in addition to the potential environmental risks of targeting energy tankers.
It called for strengthening regional and international cooperation to protect maritime navigation and trade routes, and to stop acts that endanger ships and civilian facilities, which would contribute to de-escalation and maintaining the security and stability of the region.
In a related context, the League condemned the human rights violations and repeated, systematic repression operations to which prisoners from the Gaza Strip detained in the "Rakefet" wing of Ramla Prison are being subjected, which resulted in a number of prisoners suffering burns and injuries.
It stressed the gravity of these practices, considering them a blatant violation of international humanitarian law, particularly the four Geneva Conventions of 1949 and their two Additional Protocols, the Convention against Torture, and the Basic Principles for the Treatment of Prisoners, affirming that such acts constitute crimes against humanity that require accountability and prosecution.
It demanded an immediate cessation of any repressive practices or mistreatment against Palestinian prisoners, ensuring their treatment in accordance with international human rights standards and international humanitarian law, enabling the International Committee of the Red Cross and independent oversight bodies to visit Ramla Prison and the "Rakefet" wing without restrictions, documenting the conditions and providing the necessary medical care to the injured, opening an independent and transparent international investigation into these violations and holding those responsible for them accountable, immediately releasing sick and wounded prisoners, and stopping all forms of arbitrary detention.
The League reaffirmed the centrality of the Palestinian cause in joint Arab action and its full solidarity with Palestinian prisoners and their families, calling on the international community, the Human Rights Council, and the United Nations General Assembly to assume their responsibilities in protecting Palestinian civilians and prisoners, and to end the policy of impunity.
