Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed holding a trilateral summit with US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping next month to discuss settling the war in Ukraine according to Moscow's terms, as reported by the American newspaper "The Wall Street Journal".
The newspaper quoted informed sources as saying that Putin proposed the idea during a phone call with Trump on October 9, as part of Russian efforts to capitalize on the rapprochement with Washington and reach an agreement that serves Russian interests.
According to the report, Moscow is seeking to hold the summit without the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, a move that could raise concerns for Kyiv and its European allies regarding the future of negotiations and the fate of the political settlement for the war that has been ongoing for four years.
The report indicated that the Russian plan includes, in addition to the political track, discussing a potential trade agreement that would allow the United States to purchase Russian diesel and facilitate its marketing in global markets.
For his part, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed the existence of discussions regarding the idea, explaining that the three parties acknowledge the possibility of holding the meeting in principle, despite no clear agenda having been reached yet.
While Trump has not given his final approval to the proposal, the newspaper reported that Washington is showing openness to the idea, while Beijing informed Moscow that it would not oppose holding the summit if the US President agrees to it.
According to "The Wall Street Journal", the Kremlin hopes to organize the meeting to coincide with the events of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, scheduled to be held on November 18 and 19 in the Chinese city of Shenzhen.
Analysts believe that China hosting such a meeting, if it materializes, could strengthen Beijing's diplomatic role in dealing with major international files, while the chances of the summit being held remain linked to the positions of the concerned parties and their agreement on its agenda.
