The Executive Director of Traffic at the Greater Amman Municipality, Mohammad Al-Jadou', stated that the municipality is studying the expansion of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes, while exploring the possibility of implementing other public transport systems, including the metro, in accordance with economic feasibility and implementation studies.
Al-Jadou' explained on Tuesday that the BRT is used by about 120,000 people daily, equivalent to roughly 36 million trips annually, based on 300 working days, pointing out that the experience has proven its feasibility in facilitating public transport.
He added that the municipality is preparing studies for a new proposed route starting from the Mahatta Terminal, passing through Wadi Al-Rumm and the Middle East Circle towards the Customs Circle, then via Al-Hurriya Street reaching Airport Street, to connect with the overpass project expected to be constructed towards the Naour Bridge.
He pointed out that part of the proposed route is linked to the completion of the bridge's construction, while a traffic study for the project is currently underway to evaluate the possibility of its implementation.
Regarding other transport options, Al-Jadou' said that previous studies were prepared in cooperation with external entities regarding the possibility of implementing a metro in Amman, indicating that the municipality is moving towards activating these studies and evaluating economic feasibility and implementation capacity.
He explained that the cost of constructing a light rail ranges between $20 million and $30 million per kilometer, while the cost of a metro varies significantly and may reach up to $120 million per kilometer, depending on the nature of the project and construction works, particularly for underground routes.
